Overview
The Dreamspeakers are the Traditions' animists, drawn from shamanic practice across many cultures rather than any single one. Their working assumption is that everything has a spirit, and that most problems go better if you talk to it instead of overpowering it. Spirit is their specialty Sphere, and it shapes how they read the world: the Gauntlet is a wall the other Traditions mostly pretend is not there. In play a Dreamspeaker is the cabal's diplomat with everything nonhuman. You know when a Node is guarded, which building has something angry in it, and how to buy help with an offering rather than a roll. Spirit at rank 3 takes the group into the Umbra, which changes what stories are available. The Tradition also asks for care in portrayal, so build one specific practice for your character rather than a collage of real ones.
How it works
Focus: Spirit allies, animism, and shamanic practice Typical Spheres: Spirit (the Tradition's specialty), Life, Prime, Mind Paradigm: Everything has a spirit, and the world answers those who ask it properly Practice: Journeying, trance, offerings, ceremony, dreamwork Instruments: Drums, masks, fetishes, tobacco and other offerings, songs, dreams
Tips and playstyle
Best For: Players who want allies rather than effects, and cabals planning to spend real time past the Gauntlet. Playstyle: Take Spirit first and back it with the Avatar or Node Background out of your 7 starting dots. Negotiate before you bind, and keep track of what each spirit is owed. Character Concepts: Urban ghost-talker, community elder, dream interpreter, wandering ceremonialist, a young mage who inherited someone else's obligations.
Frequently asked questions
How do Dreamspeakers differ from Verbena?
Verbena work life itself through blood, growth, and the body, and their specialty Sphere is Life. Dreamspeakers work the spirit world through negotiation, and theirs is Spirit. Both read as pagan from outside, but only one of them walks into the Umbra at rank 3.
Do I need the Spirit Sphere to play one?
Not strictly, but it is the point of the Tradition. You start with 6 Sphere dots and can put at most 3 in any one, so most Dreamspeakers open with 2 or 3 in Spirit and spread the remainder.
How do I play a Dreamspeaker respectfully?
Invent the specifics. Give your character one named practice, one set of instruments, and one community that taught them, instead of borrowing a living real-world tradition wholesale.
