Medicine (Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition)

Skills

Definition

Medicine covers diagnosis, treatment, surgery, pharmacology, and the anatomy behind all of it. For a vampire it also covers a specialized subject nobody teaches: how blood works outside a body, what happens to a vessel who has been drained too often, and what your own physiology is doing when a Rouse Check mends a wound. It earns its place in play through access more than healing. A character with Medicine gets into hospitals, blood banks, morgues, and pharmacies without questions, and those are the places a coterie needs. It is also the skill that keeps mortal allies, ghouls, and herd members alive, since none of them mend the way you do.

How it works

**Common Rolls**: - Intelligence + Medicine: Diagnosis, medical knowledge - Dexterity + Medicine: Surgery, first aid - Wits + Medicine: Emergency treatment **On Kindred**: Vampires mend with Rouse Checks rather than treatment, so Medicine is mostly for mortals, ghouls, and understanding what happened to a body rather than fixing yours. **Specialties**: Surgery, Pharmacology, First Aid, Pathology, Blood Work, Vampiric Physiology

Tips

**Character Concepts**: Surgeon, paramedic, nurse, coroner, pharmacist, a Bagger with a hospital badge and a cooler in the trunk. **Synergies**: The Bagger predator type runs on medical access, Science covers the chemistry behind pharmacology, and Larceny gets you into the storage rooms your badge does not open. **Worth Knowing**: A single dot buys the vocabulary and the access, which is most of what the skill is worth to a coterie that is not running a clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Can Medicine heal a vampire?

Not usefully. Kindred mend damage with Rouse Checks, and surgery on undead tissue does very little. Medicine matters for the living people around you.

Does Medicine help me feed?

Yes, indirectly. It is the standard route to blood bank access, it tells you how much you can safely take from a herd member, and it keeps a drained vessel alive.

Is a medical career possible for a vampire?

Night shifts make it plausible, and Kindred with medical training tend to build whole feeding operations around one hospital. The risk is colleagues who notice you never eat.
