Key facts

Edge Affinity
aptitude

Overview

The Inquisitive creed is built on the belief that a monster you understand is a monster you can kill. These hunters research, interview, catalog, and cross-reference, and their contribution to the cell arrives before the confrontation rather than during it. Their Edge affinity is aptitude, covering Improvised Gear, Global Access, Drone Jockey, and Beast Whisperer. In a session the Inquisitive hunter asks the second question, photographs the wall before anybody touches it, and connects this week's disappearance to three older ones nobody filed together. The role only works if the table gives them time, so the creed suits chronicles built on mystery rather than pure survival horror. Its cost is written into the Desperation trigger: knowledge is the thing that breaks them.

How it works

Edge Affinity: Aptitude Edges (Improvised Gear, Global Access, Drone Jockey, Beast Whisperer) Desperation Dice: An Inquisitive hunter can add Desperation dice when facing something genuinely unknown, when research reaches a conclusion they did not want, or when the answer turns out not to be enough to save the cell. Approach: Research the threat, identify weaknesses, analyze evidence, and brief the cell before anyone goes inside. Despair: Despair triggers when a Desperation die comes up 1 on a failed roll. The Inquisitive hunter is overwhelmed by what they have learned and loses access to Desperation dice until they redeem themselves through their Drive.

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Mystery-led chronicles, players who enjoy the investigation more than the fight, cells that keep walking into things nobody can identify. Playstyle: Put your single 4 in Intelligence and back it with Occult and Investigation dots, since Intelligence plus Occult is the roll that names the creature. Take the Library Edge if the cell has no sources of its own, or Drone Jockey if the chronicle is more surveillance than archive. Curiosity is the obvious Drive, though Atonement fits a hunter who once helped something and now studies it. Character Concepts: Occult researcher, forensic analyst, university librarian, folklore professor, investigative reporter with fifteen years of unpublished notes.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Inquisitive different from the other creeds?

It prioritizes understanding over immediate action. Where a Martial hunter asks how to kill it and an Entrepreneurial hunter asks what it will cost, an Inquisitive hunter asks what it is, on the theory that the other two answers follow from that one.

Is an Inquisitive hunter useless in a fight?

Only if you build them that way. The creed sets your Edge affinity and Desperation trigger, not your attributes, so nothing stops an Inquisitive hunter from holding Dexterity 3 and real Firearms dots. Most take Stamina 2 as a floor and rely on the cell for the rest.

Which Edges should an Inquisitive hunter take?

Aptitude is the affinity, so Drone Jockey and Global Access both suit the research and reconnaissance role. Library is an asset Edge rather than an aptitude, but it is the single most useful purchase for this creed, and creation gives you 2 Edges plus 1 Perk or 1 Edge plus 2 Perks to arrange.
