Overview
The Underground creed covers hunters operating where institutions do not reach: squats, back rooms, night shifts, and the parts of a city that never appear in a report. They have no money, no badge, and no letterhead, and in exchange they have sources nobody else can approach and the ability to be somewhere without being recorded. Underground hunters are the cell's scouts. They learn which building the disappearances cluster around by asking the people who sleep near it, they get inside before the group commits, and they arrange the way out. The aptitude Edge affinity fits exactly, because Improvised Gear, Global Access, Drone Jockey, and Beast Whisperer are all ways of solving a problem without owning anything expensive.
How it works
Edge Affinity: Aptitude Edges (Improvised Gear, Global Access, Drone Jockey, Beast Whisperer) Desperation Dice: An Underground hunter can add Desperation dice when exposed, when cornered with no route out, or when forced into the direct confrontation their entire method exists to avoid. Approach: Work from the shadows, gather street intelligence, use stealth and misdirection, and leave before anyone establishes who was there. Despair: Despair triggers when a Desperation die comes up 1 on a failed roll. The Underground hunter loses their composure, and Desperation dice stay unavailable until they redeem themselves through their Drive.
Tips and playstyle
Best For: Urban chronicles, players who prefer infiltration to confrontation, cells that need somebody able to go where a badge or a checkbook cannot. Playstyle: Dexterity is your attribute, carrying Stealth, Larceny, and Firearms, while Streetwise and Subterfuge are the skills that make the creed work socially. Improvised Gear is the strongest affinity Edge here, because it survives a search or an arrest in a way an Arsenal cache does not. Spend background dots on Contacts rather than Resources, since your network is the only thing you genuinely own. Character Concepts: Street hustler, hacker who works out of a diner, unlicensed private investigator, reformed burglar, urban explorer who photographed the wrong basement.
Frequently asked questions
What makes Underground different from the other creeds?
It solves problems through access rather than force or funding. Entrepreneurial hunters buy their way in and Martial hunters go through the door, while Underground hunters already know somebody inside, or know the window nobody checks.
Underground or Inquisitive, since both have aptitude affinity?
They share the Edge list and differ on method and Desperation trigger. Inquisitive hunters break when knowledge fails them, and Underground hunters break when they are exposed and cornered. Choose the one that matches how you want your character to come apart.
Does Underground mean my hunter is a criminal?
Not necessarily. The creed describes operating outside institutions, which covers activists, night-shift workers, people the system failed, and undocumented residents as readily as it covers thieves. What stays constant is that official channels are closed to you, so you built other ones.
