Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition drive

Envy

Envy is a drive in Hunter H5: Drive of the hunter who wants what the monsters have and hunts them to get close to it.

Overview

Envy is the most uncomfortable Drive in the game. This hunter has seen what the supernatural can do, immortality, power, escape from an ordinary life, and they want it. Hunting is how they stay close: you learn most about a thing by taking it apart, and every kill is also a study. The cell will not fully trust you if you play it honestly, and that tension is the appeal. An Envy hunter is one bad night away from a deal, and the Storyteller knows it. The Drive works best when the desire is specific: not power in the abstract, but the one thing a monster has that would fix your hunter's life.

How it works

Tested When: A supernatural being offers you what you want, when destroying something means destroying your only route to it, or when the cell asks you to choose between them and the offer. Desperation: Watching the gift stay out of reach is the trigger. Desperation rates 1 to 5 and adds dice to attribute plus skill pools on ten sided dice, where 6 and higher are successes. Despair: A Desperation die showing 1 on a failed roll puts you in Despair, and Desperation dice remain closed to you until your Drive redeems you. Redemption: Envy redeems by closing the distance: taking or learning something the supernatural held, or proving you can get what you want without becoming what you hunt.

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Chronicles about temptation, players who want an arc with a real chance of falling, and Storytellers happy to repeat the offer. Character concepts: A terminally ill researcher looking for a cure with a pulse, an aging athlete who watched something move faster, a hunter who was almost turned once. Synergies: The Underground creed suits a hunter who negotiates at the margins of the night, and Sense the Unnatural keeps you near what you want. Occult and Insight make this Drive playable across a chronicle.

Frequently asked questions

Does Envy mean my hunter will eventually betray the cell?

Not necessarily. The Drive is a pull, not an outcome, and plenty of Envy hunters spend an entire chronicle wanting something and never taking it. The tension is the point, the betrayal is only one possible ending.

How do I keep the other players comfortable with this Drive?

Agree at session zero that the temptation is on the table and that the group will be told when your hunter is tempted. An Envy hunter who hides everything from the players, not just the characters, stops being fun quickly.
