Overview

The Sons of Ether broke from the technocratic consensus and kept the ether, the aetheric physics mainstream science discarded. Their magic is invention: devices, theories, and papers that work because their creator is certain the science is sound. Matter is their specialty Sphere, and most of their gadgets are Matter and Forces effects wearing a brass housing. In play an Etherite is the cabal's engineer and its comic relief with teeth. A device gives your effects coincidental cover that pure gesture magic never gets, because a machine behaving strangely is far easier for a Sleeper to accept than a person doing the same thing. The Wonder Background is the natural purchase from your 7 starting dots, and it is worth deciding early whether your inventions work for anyone or only for you.

How it works

Focus: Mad science, fringe physics, and paradigm-breaking invention Typical Spheres: Matter (the Tradition's specialty), Forces, Prime, Life Paradigm: The rejected theory is correct, and a working device is the proof Practice: Experiment, invention, field testing, publication in journals nobody else reads Instruments: Prototypes and devices, lab equipment, formulae, goggles, the ether itself

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Players who want gadgets, a loud voice, and a paradigm that makes coincidental magic easy. Playstyle: Take Matter and Forces, then spend Background dots on Wonder or Resources so the lab exists in the fiction. Name your devices and explain the theory confidently and badly. Character Concepts: Disgraced university physicist, garage inventor, ship's engineer, science communicator with a channel, a genius whose single working prototype does everything.

Frequently asked questions

Do my devices work for other people?

That is a choice worth making at creation. Most Etherite gear works because its inventor believes in it, which is exactly what the Wonder Background covers for the devices that keep working without you.

Are Sons of Ether just Technocrats?

They share a history but not the authority. The Technocracy enforces one consensus reality, while the Sons of Ether publish the theories it rejected and treat every working prototype as a rebuttal.

Which Spheres make a good gadgeteer?

Matter to build and transmute, Forces to power the thing, and a dot of Prime so an invention can create rather than only rearrange. That is already 5 or 6 of your 6 starting dots, so pick a specialty.
