Overview

The Order of Hermes is the Traditions' classical academy: grades, houses, oaths, and centuries of accumulated formulae. Their claim is that magic obeys laws, that those laws can be written down, and that disciplined will applied through the correct formula gives a reliable result. Forces is their specialty Sphere, and their reputation for firepower follows straight from it. In play a Hermetic is the cabal's expert and often its arrogance. Preparation is your advantage: you are the mage who arrives with the effect already researched. Backgrounds matter more here than for most Traditions, so spend part of your 7 starting dots on Library, Mentor, or Node. The friction is social by design, since a Tradition organized around rank and precedent will argue with Virtual Adepts and Sons of Ether about almost everything.

How it works

Focus: Hermetic ritual magic, written formulae, and structured will Typical Spheres: Forces (the Tradition's specialty), Prime, Correspondence, Matter Paradigm: Reality follows law, and a correctly stated formula compels a correct result Practice: Formal ritual, invocation, ceremonial magic, long research before the casting Instruments: Grimoires, circles and sigils, wands and staves, true names, dead languages

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Players who enjoy preparation, lore, and a Tradition with real structure to push against. Playstyle: Buy Forces and Prime together so your fire is real rather than borrowed, and take Library or Mentor. State your formula out loud at the table; the Order's voice is half of what you are paying for. Character Concepts: House apprentice with something to prove, tenured occultist, archivist of dangerous texts, duelist of the Order, an exile trading on the Order's name.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hermetic magic have to be vulgar?

Not necessarily, but the paradigm leans that way. A summoning circle in front of Sleepers is vulgar and adds to your 0 to 20 Paradox track, so many Hermetics work coincidentally in public and save the full ritual for warded ground.

Why is Forces their specialty Sphere?

Forces has clean tiered effects that suit a formula-driven paradigm: name the element, bind it, direct it. It also hands the Order the offensive reputation the rest of the Traditions resent.

Is the Order a good starting Tradition?

It is one of the easiest to voice, because the paradigm tells you exactly what your magic is and why it works. The catch is that its rituals want preparation, so it rewards planning more than improvisation.
