Overview

The Virtual Adepts left the Technocracy with the tools and none of the deference. Their paradigm holds that reality is information, that information can be read and rewritten, and that anything you can model you can edit. Correspondence is their specialty Sphere, which is why their magic reads as networking: distance is a routing problem rather than a physical one. In play an Adept is the cabal's infiltrator and information broker. Correspondence rank 1 maps a building before anyone goes in, and rank 3 puts you inside it. The paradigm also gives excellent coincidental cover in a modern chronicle, since an unlocking door, a looped camera, and a leaked file are all things Sleepers already believe hackers do. The Tradition's arrogance is a feature: Adepts argue with the Order of Hermes about everything.

How it works

Focus: Digital reality, information, and code as magic Typical Spheres: Correspondence (the Tradition's specialty), Forces, Mind, Time Paradigm: Reality is information, and information can be read, copied, and rewritten Practice: Programming, hacking, modeling, virtual immersion, iteration Instruments: Computers and phones, code, networks, virtual rigs, data itself

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Players who want infiltration, information, and magic that hides comfortably in a modern setting. Playstyle: Buy Correspondence first and add Forces or Mind for what happens once you are inside. Spend Background dots on Contacts, Influence, or Library, and describe your effects as edits rather than spells. Character Concepts: Security researcher, dropout coder, data journalist, game developer, a teenager who found the Adepts through a forum.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know real hacking to play one?

No. State the intent and roll it. The Tradition's instruments are computers and networks, but the table only needs to know what you are changing, not how a genuine exploit would work.

Why is Correspondence their specialty Sphere?

Because their paradigm treats distance as addressing: a location is just a place in a network. Correspondence effects are the ones an Adept explains most easily, which is also why they end up as the Traditions' scouts.

Do Virtual Adepts work in a historical chronicle?

Their instruments largely do not. The paradigm survives as information and pattern rather than hardware, but most tables run them in the present, where their coincidental cover is strongest.
