Overview

The Hecata are V5's unified clan of death, formed from the alliance of the Giovanni, Cappadocians, Samedi, and other necromantic bloodlines. They are organized around vast extended families, often literal mortal dynasties bound by blood and ledger. Hecata study death itself: ghosts, corpses, the underworld, and the trade between living and dead. Hecata characters excel at communing with the dead, manipulating wraiths, and using death itself as a weapon. Their Disciplines (Auspex, Fortitude, and Oblivion) make them resilient observers and necromancers. Their clan bane (the Painful Kiss) makes feeding a horrifying ordeal for mortal victims, since the Hecata Kiss causes excruciating pain rather than the usual ecstasy.

How it works

Clan Disciplines: Auspex, Fortitude, Oblivion Clan Bane - Painful Kiss: The Hecata's bite brings agony instead of the usual bliss. An unrestrained victim recoils and resists, struggling to get away. A willing or coerced target must succeed on a Stamina + Resolve roll against a Difficulty of 2 + the Hecata's Bane Severity to avoid flinching away. Because of this, many Hecata feed from blood bags, the freshly dead, or by bloodletting to sidestep the problem entirely. Compulsion - Morbidity: When triggered, you must fixate on death, dying, or the dead. You may insist on examining a corpse, lecture others about decay, or steer conversation toward mortality. While compelled, you take a two-dice penalty to any roll unrelated to death. Starting Disciplines: Choose 3 dots among Auspex, Fortitude, and Oblivion (max 2 dots in any single Discipline at creation).

Tips and playstyle

Character Concepts: Family lawyer, mortician, medium, museum curator, forensic pathologist, occult dealer, dynastic accountant, ghost-binder. Playstyle: Hecata are excellent for players who want an investigator/occultist with a strong family-politics angle. The clan emphasizes long-term planning, asset management, and necromancy. Predator Types like Bagger (formal blood acquisition) and Graverobber (feeding from the recently dead) fit naturally. Avoid Siren, the Painful Kiss makes seduction-feeding nearly impossible. Synergies: Oblivion is your signature; it gives you ghost-summoning, shadow manipulation, and necromantic rituals. Auspex helps you see the dead and read intentions. Fortitude makes you durable, which matters for a clan that ends up in tombs and morgues a lot.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to the Giovanni?

The Giovanni still exist as the political and financial heart of the Hecata, but in V5 they are one family among several within a single unified clan. The Cappadocians (long thought destroyed) have re-emerged, the Samedi have allied in, and minor death-touched bloodlines have joined. Your character can be a Giovanni or any other Hecata lineage.

How does Oblivion compare to Blood Sorcery?

Both are ritual Disciplines with a power list and a ritual list, but Oblivion focuses on death, shadow, and the underworld rather than blood and elements. Oblivion powers tend to manipulate ghosts, summon darkness, or harm via decay. Each casting also risks Stains on your Humanity, since necromancy is corrosive.

Can Hecata feed on the recently dead?

Yes, the Painful Kiss is much less of a problem if the victim is already dead or unconscious. Many Hecata work as morticians or coroners specifically to access fresh corpses, and Predator Types like Graverobber are mechanically supported for exactly this style of feeding.
