Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition flaw
Recurring Nightmare
Recurring Nightmare is a flaw in Vampire V5: one specific dream returns again and again, tied to your past.
Last reviewed
Overview
Recurring Nightmare is a single dream you cannot escape. The same corridor, the same face, the same moment of your Embrace or your worst act, replayed during daysleep. Unlike general Nightmares, this one has a subject, and the subject usually has a story behind it. The Storyteller may use it as a channel for foreshadowing, repressed memory, or something reaching for you from outside.
How it works
Effect: When the nightmare strikes (Storyteller discretion, often before scenes connected to its subject), you rise with a dice penalty for the first scene or without regained Willpower. Story hook: The nightmare's content is fixed at creation and should point at unresolved history: a victim, a sire, a place. Benefit: Grants creation experience points or story leverage, like every flaw on the RPG Stack sheet.
Tips and playstyle
Character concepts: Neonate who watched their family die, diablerist haunted by the eaten soul, Hecata touched by the dead, Malkavian with a prophecy on repeat. When to take: Take it if you want a personal mystery the Storyteller can slowly unwrap.
Frequently asked questions
Does resolving the dream's cause remove the flaw?
Usually, yes. Confronting the memory or the entity behind it is the natural end of the arc, and the Storyteller may ask for a replacement flaw.
Can I have both Nightmares and Recurring Nightmare?
Yes, but the Storyteller should make sure they feel different in play rather than doubling the same penalty.
