Overview
Library is the asset Edge that turns a monster from an unknown into a problem with a weakness. It covers whatever form the archive takes: shelves of occult volumes, a scanned drive of case files, boxes of newspaper clippings, or recorded interviews with people who survived something. The Library matters in the session before the confrontation. It is what lets the cell learn that the thing will not cross running water, or that the four earlier disappearances all fell on the same date, and that shifts the plan from ambush to preparation. Asset affinity belongs to the Entrepreneurial and Martial creeds, but Library is most often taken by Inquisitive hunters, whose entire creed is built on finding out.
How it works
Category: Asset Effect: Access to an organized body of supernatural research the cell can consult Benefits: Identify creatures and their vulnerabilities, trace the history of a location or a family, cross-reference current events against older cases, and with Perks reach rarer and more dangerous material Advancement: No dot rating. Buy the base Edge, then Perks at 5 XP each for rare volumes, digital databases, or contacts inside academic and occult circles
Tips and playstyle
Best For: Inquisitive creed hunters, investigation-led chronicles, cells that want to know what they are facing before they meet it. Playstyle: Back Library with the Occult and Academics skills, because the Edge supplies the sources and those skills decide what you get out of them. Keep the archive somewhere specific: a Safe House bought from your 7 background dots makes the Library a location the story can threaten. Reading the worst of the material is a legitimate horror beat, so ask your Storyteller whether particular volumes cost something to consult. Character Concepts: University archivist, retired occult bookseller, conspiracy blogger with fifteen years of files, parish record keeper, reporter who kept every notebook.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Library just books?
No. It is any organized repository the cell can search: digital archives, recorded interviews, physical evidence, photographs, or a wall of index cards. Choose a form that fits your character, because it decides where the archive lives and how it can be lost.
What does Library give me in a scene?
A concrete answer instead of a guess. Where another cell burns a session establishing what the creature is, a cell with Library establishes it in one scene and spends the rest of the session acting on the weakness.
Library or the Occult skill?
They are different layers and they work best together. Occult is what your hunter already knows, while Library is what the cell can look up. High Occult with no Library limits you to memory, and a Library with nobody who can read it is just a storage problem.
