Overview
Improvised Gear is an aptitude Edge, which means it lives in the hunter rather than in a storage unit, and nobody can confiscate it. Given a hardware store, a junkyard, or the contents of a kitchen, you produce something that works: a weapon, a trap, a pick, a crude version of equipment the cell could never buy legally. The Edge exists for the moment the plan fails and the gear is gone. It answers being searched at the door, arriving somewhere unprepared, or needing a tool that does not officially exist. Aptitude affinity belongs to the Inquisitive and Underground creeds, and Improvised Gear suits Underground especially well, since operating from the margins means rarely having the right equipment on hand.
How it works
Category: Aptitude Effect: Build functional tools, weapons, and devices from scavenged materials Benefits: Produce improvised weapons and traps, jury-rig a technical fix, fabricate a rough substitute for specialized equipment, and with Perks raise the quality and complexity of what you can make Advancement: No dot rating. Buy the base Edge, then Perks at 5 XP each to build faster, build better, or build things that would normally require a workshop
Tips and playstyle
Best For: Underground creed hunters, cells with no money and no armory, players who like solving the problem with what is already in the room. Playstyle: Improvised Gear leans on the Craft and Technology skills, so put dots there if this is going to be your contribution. Its real advantage over Arsenal is that it survives a search, an arrest, and a border crossing, because the Edge is knowledge rather than property. Expect what you build to be fragile: Storytellers routinely rule that an improvised item works once, which is usually exactly enough. Character Concepts: Handyman who fixes everything on the block, junkyard scrapper, theater props builder, chemistry dropout, hacker who also solders.
Frequently asked questions
What can I build?
Anything plausible from the materials in front of you: improvised weapons, simple traps, a listening device, picks, a smoke source, or a crude stand-in for a tool you cannot obtain. Agree the limits with your Storyteller, because the Edge is deliberately open ended.
Improvised Gear or Arsenal?
Arsenal gives you better equipment that can be seized; Improvised Gear gives you worse equipment that cannot. In a chronicle with police pressure or frequent travel, the aptitude usually outlasts the asset.
Do I need materials and time?
Yes, and that constraint is what the Edge trades for its reliability. In an empty concrete room with sixty seconds you get nothing, which is why cells that lean on Improvised Gear scout the site first and arrive early.
