Overview

Repel the Unnatural turns a hunter's conviction into a pressure that monsters do not want to walk into. It drives creatures back, holds a doorway, and buys the seconds a cell needs to get an injured member out of a room. It is a defensive Edge and it rewards being played as one. Repel does not kill anything, it decides where the fight happens, which is how it turns a corridor into a chokepoint and a room into somewhere the cell can regroup. Endowment is the Faithful creed's affinity, and Repel is the most characteristic Faithful Edge on the list, although the conviction behind it does not have to be religious.

How it works

Category: Endowment Effect: Force supernatural creatures to withdraw or refuse a threshold Benefits: Break contact with something that has closed the distance, hold a door or a line while the others move, weaken supernatural presences nearby, and with Perks widen the area, extend the duration, or affect stronger creatures Advancement: No dot rating. Buy the base Edge, then Perks at 5 XP each for wider effect, longer duration, or traction against things the base Edge cannot move

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Faithful creed hunters, cells that keep losing people during the retreat, players who would rather protect than deal damage. Playstyle: Repel pairs with Resolve, which also feeds your Willpower total of Composure plus Resolve, so a hunter built around this Edge is durable in the ways that matter. Use it to open a rescue window rather than to win a fight, because the creature is being pushed and not stopped. Define what you are projecting, whether faith, grief, or a promise made to a specific person, since that definition is what a Storyteller leans on when the Edge fails. Character Concepts: Parish priest, hospice chaplain, parent searching for a taken child, veteran who made a vow, sanctified fighter who does not discuss it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Repel stop every monster?

No. It is a deterrent, and a strong one, but powerful creatures resist it and some will accept the discomfort and come through anyway. Plan for it to buy time rather than to end an encounter.

How is Repel different from Thwart the Unnatural?

Repel acts on the creature's body and its willingness to approach, while Thwart acts on the creature's powers, breaking control and disrupting effects. Against something that fights physically you want Repel; against something that fights your mind you want Thwart.

Do I have to be religious to take it?

No. The Faithful creed has endowment affinity and is the obvious home for this Edge, but Repel runs on conviction, and a hunter driven by an Oath or by Vengeance can project it as hard as a believer does.
