Overview
Sense the Unnatural is an endowment, meaning it is something the hunter carries inside themselves rather than something bought or built. It registers supernatural creatures and phenomena as a pressure, a smell, a visual wrongness, or a certainty with no evidence behind it, and how it manifests is yours to define at creation. The Edge makes a hunter the cell's early warning system. It answers the question most sessions turn on: is the person we are talking to a person. Endowment affinity belongs to the Faithful creed, but Sense the Unnatural gets taken across all five creeds, because the information it provides is the difference between an investigation and an ambush.
How it works
Category: Endowment Effect: Perceive nearby supernatural creatures, powers, and phenomena Benefits: Notice a monster before it acts, tell that a supernatural power is being used in your presence, see past a disguise or a glamour, and with Perks gain range, precision, or the ability to follow a trace Advancement: No dot rating. Buy the base Edge, then Perks at 5 XP each for longer range, identification rather than bare detection, or tracking a presence you have felt once
Tips and playstyle
Best For: Scouts and investigators, cells with nobody else able to tell human from not-human, players who want to be the one who says we should leave now. Playstyle: Decide the manifestation at creation and keep it consistent, because a specific tell (a taste of copper, a change in the light) plays far better than a generic alarm. Back it with Awareness dots, since Storytellers frequently ask for a roll to interpret what you are picking up. Accept that the Edge will sometimes tell you something is wrong without telling you what, which raises the Danger rating rather than resolving it. Character Concepts: Church sexton who always knew, emergency room nurse who reads rooms, medium who was mostly a fraud, hunter who survived one encounter and came back changed.
Frequently asked questions
How far does the sense reach?
It depends on your Perks and on the strength of what is present, since powerful creatures register from farther off. The base Edge is generally same-room or same-building awareness, so buy range Perks at 5 XP each if scouting is your role in the cell.
Does it tell me what the creature is?
Not at the base Edge, which reports presence rather than species. Identification is a Perk, and until you have it the Library Edge or the Occult skill is what turns the feeling into a name and a weakness.
Can it be fooled?
Yes. Wards, distance, a place saturated with supernatural traces, and genuinely dormant creatures can all produce a false quiet. Never let the cell treat a negative reading as proof that a room is safe.
